Profile for the 'Little Gem' Magnolia

Type of Plant: Small, Magnolia grandiflora hybrid that is compact, narrowly columnar, upright branching, evergreen.  Produces elegant fragrant creamy white flowers during the spring and summer.  Produce bright red seeds in cone like structure. Maximum height is 40-50' and 15-20' spread.
Habitat: Highly adaptable to moist soils.
Distribution: Southeast U.S.  Zones 8-9A.
Landscape Use: Excellent as a flowering specimen tree, large dense shrub, good tree for small gardens.
Wildlife Benefit: Small red seeds used by a variety of wildlife.
Soil: Prefers rich, moist, acid soil with a pH of 4.5-6.5.
Light: Full sun to part shade.
Water: Drought tolerant once established.
Misc: Dwarf cultivar of the Southern Magnolia with smaller leaves.
